The VISN 23 Nurse IV Patient Safety Officer (PSO) demonstrates leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care within VISN 23. Major Duties include but are not limited to: Responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation of the VISN wide program for Patient Safety Facilitating the growth of VISN 23 as a highly reliable organization (HRO). Oversight of eight (8) health care systems (HCS), over 60 Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and 8 Community Living Centers with regard to Patient Safety and HRO. Collaborates with VISN and HCS leadership to ensure that these programs are executed in accord with VHA Directives/ Handbooks/guidance as well as the standards of regulatory/accreditation entities and relevant professional organizations. Possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting. Collaborates closely with the multiple disciplines that have responsibility for the Patient Safety and HRO programs at the VHA and health care system levels. Consultant, teacher, mentor, and technical support to the VISN and facility leadership/staff for Patient Safety and HRO. Uses the nursing process and sound judgment in clinical and administrative decision making, applying leadership and analytical skills, self-direction, and initiative. Serves as the Network liaison to national program offices. Participates in survey readiness training and site visits, data collection and analysis, and authors responses to inquiries about Patient Safety. Responsible for serving as the Chair of the associated committees as appropriate and serves on additional committees and councils at the facility, VISN, and National levels as required/appropriate.
