POSITION SUMMARY Provides blood recovery services to the Operating Rooms, Intensive Care Units, Post-Operative Anesthesia Care Units, Emergency Departments, Catheterization Labs, Labor and Delivery as well as providing Platelet Gel for patients in assigned facility and the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) Clinic 24/7. Position has limited supervision with a great deal of autonomy while working in a unique environment that provides many opportunities to participate in "cutting edge" technology and procedures. CORE FUNCTIONS 1. Performs required clinical tasks involving Blood Recovery and Platelet Gel. 2. Evaluates patients to determine candidacy for Blood Recovery procedures and selects appropriate equipment to use for procedure. 3. Serves as mentor/resource/preceptor for other team members. 4. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all team members, physicians and hospital personnel. 5. Records and documents accurately all procedures per Food and Drug Administration (FDA), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), College of American Pathologist (CAP), Joint Commission (JC) guidelines. Enters procedures into database. 6. Maintains, cleans, decontaminates, and stocks all equipment. 7. Performs Point of Care Testing (POCT). Conducts Quality Control/Analysis (QA/QC) on POCT machines and Blood Recovery Equipment. 8. Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for providing blood recovery services in assigned department. Provides direct patient care, interacts with physicians, clinical staff, patients, patient family members and other facility personnel. External interaction with the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) Clinic as needed. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelors or Associates Degree in science or related field or equivalent experience. Current Basic Life Support/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (BLS/CPR) for Healthcare Providers course completion card. Valid Drivers License in good standing. Possesses a basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, sterile technique, quality control/analysis (QA/QC), Point of Care Testing (POCT) of lab specimens, computer databases and troubleshooting. Demonstrates effective decision making and organizational skills in response to changes in shift operations or emergency situations. Ability to resolve concerns in a prompt and effective manner. Possesses a calm demeanor in difficult and stressful situations. Skilled in troubleshooting and resolving all equipment issues in an effective composed manner while in a stressful and disagreeable environment. Ability to think creatively to solve problems or suggest improvements to the department and organization as a whole. Possesses effective communication skills to facilitate dissemination of critical information to physicians, team members and other hospital personnel. Uses common sense in all situations. Complete knowledge and understanding of FDA, AABB, CAP, JC and other agencies governing Blood Recovery policies, procedures, protocols and processes. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Prior experience in Blood Recovery. Certified Perioperative Blood Management Technologist (C-PBMT). Prior experience in operating room, hospital or healthcare.
