POSITION SUMMARY:Â A registered nurse who assists in the overall responsibility for infection control and clinical epidemiology services with Northwest Texas Healthcare System. Interfaces with all levels of personnel and departments to facilitate achievement of defined institutional and program objectives. Collaborates with other members of the Quality Management department to address clinical performance measurement issues. Participates as a member of the Infectious Disease Team.Â
Demonstrates initiative in the coordination of clinical epidemiology services by facilitating effective surveillance, prevention, and control of hospital acquired and other designated infections throughout NWTHS. Provides assistance and services within the scope of care to the laboratory and the Public Health Department by reporting to the appropriate entity identified disease processes within designated timeframes. Responsible for participating and in Performance Improvement activities that are directly and or indirectly related to this scope of care.Assists with the epidemiology program functions in relation to the UHS and NWTHS mission, vision, strategic goals, and values.
Demonstrates consistency in compliance withÂ the Joint CommissionÂ infection control standards, as well as other regulatory agency requirements, through the application of valid clinical epidemiology principles, provision of appropriate consultative and educational input, and promotion of service excellence standards. Additionally serves as a member on the Infectious Disease team.Â Works closely with the Epidemiology Coordinator.Â
Collaborates with all members of the healthcare team both within the facility and within the community.Demonstrates competency in computer skills and database management through utilization of specialized software and other software systems as necessary. Prepares data as assigned, analyzes and reports information within designated timeframes. Prepares and analyzes data for specifically requested reports in a timely manner.
Assists in maintaining the budget for the epidemiology functions while providing the scope of services for this role within NWTHS. Contributes to the overall objective of resource conservation by identifying opportunities to simultaneously improve patient care while decreasing expenses or to reduce/eliminate unnecessary cost, assisting in cost-benefit analyses, and participating in rational decision making when clinical needs exceeded resource availability.
Position Specific Requirements:
Conducts daily infection prevention electronic surveillance via the Cerner IP Worklist, and investigates all potential HAIs using NHSN criteria and the Cerner NHSN Advisor.Â Alerts IP manager to those events that meet NHSN HAI criteria, and enters reportable events into NHSN.
Collects data and performs clinical analysis utilizing CDC algorithms, NHSN, Cerner NHSN Advisor and Cerner DA2Â
Conducts monthly internalÂ HAI validationÂ via Cerner DA2 templates and shares information with infection prevention manager
Balances and imports monthly surgical procedure files into NHSN.Â Â Imports weekly demographic files into NHSN.
Prepares monthly UHS HAI dashboard and quarterly NHSN CMS corporate reports with comprehensive analysis
Oversees data collection and analysis for corporate HAI reduction initiatives at facility level, e.g., CLABSI/CAUTI reduction dashboard
Runs daily isolation list in Cerner DA2 and sends to facility IPs
Conducts daily surveillance on state notifiable conditions (reportables), gathers required information via the Cerner EMR and faxes to the local health department
Coordinates the collection, data entry and analysis of numerator and denominator hospital-associated infection (HAI) data into NHSN.Â Verifies that reports meets NHSN definition and criteria for reporting.Â
Calculates cost analysis based on HAI reductions and provides summaries of improvement strategies and outcomes for infection prevention manager
Prepares accurate and timely facility and unit-based reports for submission to infection prevention manager
Participates in infection prevention education of staff, and develops visual presentations for educational use
Collaborates closely with corporate infection prevention program managerÂ in data entry, reporting and analysis
Assists in setting department goals
Assists with the development and implementation of the annual Infection Prevention Plan
Describes regulatory body impact on the facility infection prevention program, and communicates standards to staff
Sets personal and professional goals related in enhancing prevention knowledge.Â APIC and/or SHEA membership and participation recommended.Â National certification in infection control (CIC) by end of first year of employment in position.
Understands infection prevention state and federal regulations, and TJC accreditation requirements
Understands CDC infection prevention methods for HAI determination
Understands role of infection control in daily hospital operationsÂ
Acts as a resource for the infection prevention department, and assists in mentoring new IPs
